Teen SRC 2018 – The Reluctant Assassin by Eoin Colfer

Great news, everyone!!! Our favorite author of the amazingly witty Artemis Fowl series is back again, this time with a teen novel!!! I just found out about it not long ago, and I was so excited to read more of Eoin Colfer’s work. This series is honestly so good that I wasn’t satisfied with only three books in the series.

It’s about a boy named Riley from the Victorian era, who somehow gets transported to modern day society. There, he meets the young FBI agent Chevie Savano, and together they try to stop Albert Garrick, the assassin-for-hire who has followed Riley from his own time, from returning to his own time with knowledge about modern society.

Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Seventeen year old Aria has lived in the enclosed city of Reverie all her life. After failing to hear from her scientist mother, she tries to get information on her whereabouts, but that ends badly, resulting in her exile to the outer wasteland, known as the Death Shop. Aria knows that her chances of survival are slim, between the cannibals and the electrified energy storms. She’s been that even the very air she breathes will kill her. Then, she meets an outsider named Perry. Though he is wild and a savage, he is her only hope of staying alive.

I liked how the author didn’t waste much time explaining all the technical terms used, and jumped straight into the story instead. This is something I really appreciate, as I have a short attention span, and explanations bore me, as well as flashbacks and useless backstory.

Teen SRC 2018 – Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (Book vs Movie)

Image result for ready player one bookOkay, I’m sorry, but this review is going to be just me ranting about how the movie didn’t really do the book any justice, so brace yourself. There are probably a lot of spoilers.

Summary: Wade Watts lives in the year 2045, a time when most (the entirety) of the population is on a virtual world called the Oasis all day. That’s because, well, with global warming and stuff, no one really wants to be in the real world. When the creator of the Oasis died a few years ago, he left a viral video behind saying that all of his riches, along with ownership of the world, are locked away somewhere like Easter Eggs, and that whoever finds his three keys will inherit it. This led to a giant surge of people trying to desperately find the keys, but as more time passes, people gradually gave up. Until one day, Wade stumbles upon the first key that no one has ever found before.Read More

Teen SRC 2018 – And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

Related imageEight strangers were invited by a millionare as weekend guests to his own private island. After the ferry left, a storm suddenly began, leaving them stranded on the island, with their host nowhere to be found. After sitting down for dinner, a recording begins playing, accusing all the guests and the two servants present of having committed murder in the past, but have escaped justice. Its claim that everyone present were brought to the island to pay for their crimes was initially scoffed at… until one of the guests died soon after. As time progresses, and more and more are killed, the survivors notice something strange: All of the deaths that have occurred are following an eerie nursery rhyme that seemingly reflects the victim’s manner of death…

This book was SO GOOD!!!! It was so suspenseful and scary, but I couldn’t stop reading it until I finished. Every time someone dies, I get more nervous and curious about why the killer is doing this to seemingly innocent people. It was so worth reading, and anything you are still confused about is explained in the last chapter, which includes the killer’s motive, and how the victims were killed.

Teen SRC 2018 – The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie

Image result for the mysterious affair at stylesEmily Inglethorp, the wealthy lady owner of the Styles Court suddenly dies early one morning after a violent fit. With even the Scotland Yard uncertain of the identity of the murderer, our narrator, Hastings, brings in his old friend Hercules Poirot to investigate this case. With many people on the estate who were all more than capable of committing the crime, each with something to gain from Ms. Inglethorp’s death, will Hastings and the detective be able to bring the murderer to justice?

I love this series (and author) so much. I’ve probably read almost half of the 42 books in the series, and I just can’t get enough of these murder cases!! Agatha Christie is so good at scattering the clues around in our plain sight that I get super frustrated whenever I see how Poirot solved the case because all the clues were RIGHT THERE. The completely clueless Hastings provides some comic relief in a serious subject, whiles also blocking the reader’s view into Poirot’s head. There are many plot twists, and we are kept guessing until the very end!

Teen SRC 2018- Paper Hearts by Meg Wiviott

Image result for paper hearts bookThis book is based on a true story that took place in World War II, during the Holocaust, about two girls named Fania and Zlatka, about the bond that help them hope for the best in the face of the worst.

For Fania’s birthday, Zletka makes something for her that could mean death if it was ever discovered. She makes an origami heart, containing the wishes for happiness and hopes of all of their friends for Fania to carry. This heart is one of the few items created in Auschwitz, and can be seen today at the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Center.

This was a very touching book about a beautiful friendship, found in a cruel, bitter, and unexpected place. These brave girls were able to still hope for a better future after everything they’ve been through, and should be looked up to.

This was an incredible book. It was not only humorous but it also had a great plot. The author Randi Park did an incredible job portraying the relationship between each character, in a short quick read. I would rate this book a 5/5.
