The Unexpected EverythingSo…Real Life isn’t usually a genre I read but this book made it onto my exceptions list. The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson is just so hilarious and relatable that even readers who hate anything non-magical (aka me) won’t be able to put it down! I can’t say much here without spoiling but trust me, this book is a super fun and happy read so you won’t have to worry about the traumatizing stress experienced in fantasy or paranormal stories when your favourite characters are subject to dying at any given time…

!SPOILER ALERT!

This is the story of 17 year old Alexandra “Andie” Walker; she is SUPER organized and always plans ahead, just a natural benefit of being a politician’s daughter I guess. However, being a politician, her dad is never around so she has been taking care of herself for a LONG time, this summer though, due to complications at work, her dad is staying home for the first time since Andie’s mom died. The awkwardness of not having lived together for several years is very tension-filled and thick so all Andie wants to do is leave for her internship camp and resume the independent life. This all crashes down on her though, when she receives a call informing her that camp is no longer an option as her place there had been revoked. Desperate for something to fill this space in her resume, Andie picks up a last minute summer job: Walking dogs… which definitely does not look as good as an internship camp on a resume. The summer starts off with Andie rather under the weather but as you meet more of the characters and get to know more about each of them, the story starts to lighten up and glance more towards the bright side of things. *Warning! Fantasy author boyfriend and amazing friends may be encountered in this book!* As the story goes on, Andie gets to know her dad better and catches him up on the past few years of her life, she also begins to change and starts to live more freely, meaning she worries less about how her actions will look on her college applications. Like all other Real Life reads, this book is less about the plot and more about the characters and how they develop throughout the story, it was great to read about her relationship with her boyfriend but also with her friends. I give this book a 5/5 stars because it honestly impressed me with how it kept me hooked even though I’m more of a paranormal/fantasy girl.
