Teen SRC 2018 – Perfect: A Pretty Little Liars Book

Perfect: A Pretty Little Liars book is written by Sara Shepard

The third book in the Pretty Little Liars Book, the story picks up from where it last stopped. A continues to send threatening messages, planning to expose Alison DiLaurentis best friends for their secrets which were supposed to die with Alison. Spencer’s parents send her to her therapy, thinking it will help her feel better with all of the mysterious deaths happening around. Hanna wants to improve her relationship with her friend, at the same time look good in everything she wears. Aria wants to improve her relationship with her mom and her English A.P teacher Mr. Fitz. Emily wants to redeem herself in her parent’s eyes, by being the swim team captain and stepping in line with the family. Will the four Girls find out who is this mysterious A or will they be exposed, one by one?

This was a great book. I would rate this book a 5/5. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy reading about drama, mystery, and thriller. This book had a good plot and I liked that it was written in the perspective of all four girls. This helped unreel the story bit by bit.

Teen SRC 2018- Alan Turing: The Enigma: The Book That Inspired the Film The Imitation Game by Andrew Hodges

The official book behind the film, The Imitation Game, this is a dramatic portrayal of the life and work of Alan Turing, one of Britain’s most extraordinary unsung heroes, and one of the world’s greatest innovators.
This is the official story that has inspired the British film, The Imitation Game, a nail-biting race against time following Alan Turing, the pioneer of modern-day computing and credited with cracking the German Enigma code, and his brilliant team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of World War II. Turing, whose contributions and genius significantly shortened the war, saving thousands of lives, was the eventual victim of an unenlightened British establishment, but his work and legacy live on.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown released a statement of apology in 2009 on behalf of the British government for the “appalling” treatment of Turing for being part of the LGBTQ+ community.

This book may seem boring to many teenagers (there is a lot of pages), and I know it is not the usual fictional love/fantasy stories most girls/guys seem to gravitate towards during summer, but I promise you that this is the most hard-hitting, and beautiful book I have ever picked up. Alan Turing is a historical icon, and this book just made me know the man behind the machine.  This book is completely non-fiction but written in a way a character would be. I actually grew really close to Alan’s personality and felt his pain. This book is totally underrated, and I hope more people get the honour of reading his biography and see him in a different light.

Teen SRC 2018- Spice and Wolf by Isuna Hasekura

Image result for spice and wolfSpice and Wolf is a novel (yes, novel not manga) about a travelling merchant named Kraft Lawrence who wanders the land, buying and selling goods until a girl with ears and a tail named Holo claiming to be the goddess of harvest appears in his merchant cart. She and Lawrence strike a deal. She helps Lawrence’s business and in return, Lawrence will bring Holo to her homeland.

When you look at this cover, the first thing you might think is “Manga? No thanks. I only read high-end stuff like Twilight and Fifty Shades of Gray.” But don’t you think that’s a bit closed minded? You skip out on hundreds of thousands of books because they’re labelled anime or manga? You might miss your favourite series just because of your pride in your book selection. And this isn’t even a manga. It’s full of words and the occasional pretty illustration. But the book could have all the words in the world and still be a terrible book. So how does this book stack up against the rest?Read More

Teen SRC 2018 – Symptoms of Being Human by Jeff Garvin

Symptoms of Being Human

This book was so awesome! It portrays the main character’s voice so well! This book is about a kid named Riley who is gender fluid. It means that some days Riley wakes up as a boy, some days as a girl. But, Riley isn’t so sure which category applies. But then Riley starts a blog. Anonymously, Riley starts to share experiences to the public- through the name Alix. But then the blog goes viral, and Riley is in deep trouble. Riley isn’t ready for fame yet. Especially since Riley’s parents don’t know about the “gender fluidity” crisis yet. Riley has no idea who did it, but there’s been a hater posting mean comments lately, and Riley is almost 99.9% sure that the hater is the same person as…..I’m giving wayyyyy too much away, aren’t I?

Anyways, I loved this book, and I know that you guys will too! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Teen SRC 2018- The Mystery of the Echo Lodge by Louise Munro Foley

My friend suggested this book to me a while ago and I finally chose to read it. I thought it was pretty cool because this book is part of the Choose Your Own Adventure series. This series of books lets you decide the story. Every few pages it gives you options on what you should do next, then you choose that page and continue the story. The cool thing about it though is that it can go two ways, really well and you solve the mystery and survive, or the other way. In my case I didn’t necessarily solve the mystery but I did survive. Thats just about it that I can tell you about this book because if you read it it will most likely be different. But I think you should try reading this series!

Teen SRC 2018- Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly

Image result for hidden figures book summaryThis book tells the story of four women who possibly change our world. Meet Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden, these four women are the people who helped the United States launch the first man in space. These women helped out at NASA, they where all mathematical geniuses, at first they’re where about 30 women working in one room. Then Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden,  all got different jobs helping out in other departments at NASA. It was hard for them to fit in because they didn’t look like the others and where not favoured anywhere. This story takes place when there was a lot of racism. But they all fought for they’re rights.

I really enjoyed this book because it shows how Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden all fought for they’re rights and never gave up. This book was also made into a movie that shows what it looked like at the time. Although the book had a little more detail I think the movie is definitely worth watching!
