Teen SRC 2018 – Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

In Mare Barrow’s world, there are 2 types of blood. Red blooded humans are the poor people that are sent to war and the silver blooded people live like royalty and have super powers. Mare is red blooded. (Oh ya this is in the future) She discovers she isn’t a normal red. The silver royal family has to hid the truth so they cover up her old identity. With her new identity, she has more access on information she needs. She finds out dark secrets. There is a great war and she wants to stop it. All the reds are dying while the silvers are just whining about the conditions.

This story is filled with really unexpected twists and  turns and betrayals which would make you feel really really really angry. That’s why I like it:) I also like it because it relates to society because poor people ends up doing all the job while the rich people are on vacation 24/7 (not really) but this book has more connection to the caste system in India (you’ll learn it in socials 8)

Teen SRC 2018 – Short for Chameleon by Vicki Grant

Short for Chameleon by Vicki Grant

Yup! This is one of the Reading Riot Books. So right now only 7% of the people voted this book as their favourite Reading Riot Book and I’m one of them. I hope this post will make you change your mind because I was suggested this book at my school library so i will suggest all you guys Short for Chameleon.

I’m probably a social media wannabe but I was going through some funny posts and I saw a post that kinda relates to this book. So the post is about this mall in Japan where you can RENT a boyfriend to accompany you while you are shopping and apparently they have these type of things around the WORLD and I’m kinda shook. Do you know why it is called Short for CHAMELEON? Cam Redden is something kinda like a chameleon. It’s his job as a part-time employee of the Almost Family Surrogate Agency to blend into other people’s lives, whether he’s hired to play a bereaved-but-stoic grandson or a client’s kid brother. So it’s kinda like rent-a-relative that isn’t really your relative but is considered to be your relative because he’s hired for being your relative;)

Teen SRC 2018 – In Some Other Life by Jessica Brody

In Some Other Life by Jessica Brody

In Some Other Life is a real life story about a girl who decided to decline her acceptance to Windsor Academy (a private school) and decides to attend a public school and the reason behind it is because her crush (Austin) attends that school and he recently asked her out. But soon, she saw Austin kissing her best friend and from there, she regretted declining her acceptance to Windsor Academy. The next day, she fell and hit her head where she wakes up in “another” universe and is a senior at Windsor Academy and is the coolest, smartest, popular person she wanted to be… but is she actually happy?

The quote on the back of the book says “The first thought that enters my mind as I watch my boyfriend kissing my best friends is: You chose wrong. Not the wrong boyfriend. And not even the wrong best friend. But the wrong life.” And i partially agree because you shouldn’t “follow” your best friend or your boyfriend. You should follow what you think is best for you even if that means that you aren’t in the school as your boyfriend.

I recently borrowed this book from the library because my friend suggested it cause she knows that I like real life stories. I like this book because I guess it’s pretty relatable and I like the way the author wrote it as if she was Kennedy (the girl)

Teen SRC 2018 – The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

To all my fellow elementary kids, you will be reading this in grade 8 so I’m not gonna spoil it too much!

It all started when the Curtis boys’ parents died. Darry (the oldest) is always taking care of the family but can be a little rough sometimes. Ponyboy (the youngest) doesn’t really like Darry because he’s “mean” and doesn’t really understand him but Sodapop (the second oldest) understands Ponyboy. Ponyboy and his friend (also in the Greasers) got into some trouble and had to run and hide away before they get caught by the cops but from making that decision, everything went upside down.

To be honest, when i first started reading this book with my class I thought it would be boring but I promise you that things get a lot intense when you continue reading it. There is a movie as well but I personally like the book more because I like to imagine the story.

Teen SRC 2017 – Maximum Ride The Angel Experiment by James Patterson

How does it feel to know that you were born out of a test tube? Well, Max and her gang were just normal kids until they found out that they were kids… with wings. When they found out that they were “test tube babies,” they wanted to know who were their families and where they lived after being “kidnapped” away. They fly more than kilometres to find food, shelter, and running away from “the Erasers.” The Erasers are a group of human wolves that try to capture Max and her gang back to the “School.” The School isn’t like any other school, it is a hospital who mix genes together. Max is a group of six with Nudge, Fang, Angel, Gasman, and Iggy. All they want to be are just normal kids.

I like this book because it has chapter books, comic books, and a movie. I personally enjoy the comic books more than the chapter books because there are images and it’s fun reading what the characters are saying. I haven’t watched the movie but I hope it will come back to theatres!

Teen SRC 2017 – Scar Island by Dan Gemeihart

This book was a very intense story filled with adventure and emotions. When I was reading this book, I felt very emotional myself but i could not lay my eyes off of the pages.

Who plays with fire? Well a kid named Jonathan plays with fire because he likes to watch his inventions burn in flames. One day his younger sister told him to stop playing with fire because it is very dangerous and could cause an accident. She took his matches and hid them. One night, Jonathan heard his sister yelling in the basement. He ran outside and heard his sister yelling so he tried running back inside the house but it was too dangerous and ended up with scars on his arms. He was not able to save his sister.

Everyone thought that Jonathan was responsible for everything that happened to his sister because he was the one who would play with fire. He ended up in Juvie and the people there were very mean and cruel. Jonathan became a “slave” because everyone kept barking at him to do the chores and if Jonathan doesn’t do it properly, he has to spend a couple of minute on a cruel machine called the “Sinners Sorrow” where you kneel on a sharp blade. Jonathan now have to stay in “Slabhenge” (the juvie) for the longest 2 months of his life with the Sinners Sorrow and the torture of all the staffs.

Teen SRC 2017 – Charlotte’s Web by: E.B. White

Just because you were born differently and smaller than the others doesn’t mean that you should be treated differently or be abused. Wilbur (the pig) was definitely different. He was smaller than the other pigs and was told that he would not be able to live a long life. Fern, a very nice little girl, told her father not to kill the pig and should give it a chance to try to live. Soon Fern was not able to take care of Wilbur because he started growing and could not fit in the house. So Fern gave the pig to her uncle (Mr. Zuckerman) because he owns a barn. Wilbur been very depressed after Fern gave him away. It was starting to become cold and the sheep told Wilbur that he would turn into bacon and ham. Wilbur was very scared so his friend Charlotte (the spider) decided to help him. Charlotte made a spider web and wrote “Some Pig”. Mr. Zuckerman believed that the pig wrote that and soon Wilbur became famous for doing tricks and spelling on a spider web but when he heard that Charlotte gotten sick, he felt very sad because Charlotte was the one that helped him and now Wilbur was going to help Charlotte.

I love this book because at first, Wilbur was ill and everyone thought that he wouldn’t survive until his peers and his friends all made Wilbur believe that he was a special pig and that he would survive. Always believe in yourself.
