Inkheart by Cornelia Funke

Twelve year old Meggie and her father Mo live in a small farmhouse, acting as “book doctors,” people who repairing and restoring books. One rainy night, a strange figure arrives at the door. Curious, Meggie listens at the door, and hears her father and stranger talking in low, hushed voices, which turns into an argument. Soon after, Meggie is suddenly dragged into an adventure she has only ever read about in books, where the main character must stop an evil villain. Trying to control the power she’d just learned that she possessed, she needs to change the course of the story that will change her life forever.

I read this book assuming that it is a kids’ book, but that was not the case at all. Even though Meggie, the main character, is only twelve years old, the story is very believable, with likeable characters, magic, and adventure. I also found Meggie and her father’s power is really cool. Seriously, who doesn’t want to be able to make their favorite characters from a book come to life in the real world?
